The best neck stretches include the Seated Neck Stretch, Chin Tucks, and Supported Fish Pose to improve alignment, reduce tension, and counteract perimenopausal collagen loss.

Neck Stretches for Women

I’ve spent the last 15 years working with women in their 40s, and if there is one thing I see consistently, it is the 'tech neck' tension that seems to peak during the perimenopausal transition. My clients often come to me complaining of a stiff neck, but what they are really feeling is the intersection of structural strain and hormonal shifts.

Why this matters in perimenopause

The relationship between perimenopause and neck pain is deeply physiological, primarily driven by the decline of 17β-estradiol. Estrogen plays a critical role in maintaining collagen synthesis and cartilage integrity; as levels drop, the intervertebral discs in the cervical spine become less hydrated and more prone to thinning. A 2018 study published in 'Menopause' highlighted that lower estrogen levels are directly correlated with increased disc degeneration in the neck and lower back in women compared to age-matched men.

Furthermore, the decline in estrogen affects the musculoskeletal system's inflammatory response. Pro-inflammatory cytokines often increase during this transition, leading to a sensation of 'generalized joint soreness' that frequently settles in the neck and shoulders. Cortisol also plays a role; as the adrenal glands take over some sex hormone production, the body stays in a higher state of sympathetic 'fight or flight' arousal. This keeps the neck muscles in a state of semi-contraction, leading to chronic tightness. By performing targeted exercises, we aren't just stretching muscle; we are actively counteracting the systemic collagen loss and helping to regulate the nervous system to lower that cortisol-induced muscle guarding.
