Why this matters in perimenopause

Wall pilates is particularly suited to perimenopause for a reason that has nothing to do with aesthetics.

Balance deterioration begins in the perimenopausal years. A 2022 network meta-analysis found that Pilates-based exercise was among the most effective interventions for improving balance in early postmenopausal women. The wall provides a safety net that makes balance-challenging exercises accessible to women who would otherwise skip them out of fear of falling.

The pelvic floor connection matters here too. Standard Pilates cues about "drawing the navel in" can actually increase downward pelvic floor pressure if done incorrectly. Wall-supported positions make it easier to maintain neutral pelvis alignment, which is the only position where pelvic floor engagement actually works as intended.

A randomized controlled trial comparing Pilates to targeted pelvic floor training found equivalent outcomes for urinary incontinence symptoms. That stopped me. You can get pelvic floor benefits from exercises that look nothing like Kegels, as long as the alignment is correct. The wall makes alignment correct by default.
